Dog Illnesses That Need Immediate Attention

There is nothing more precious to you and your family than your beloved dog. That is why it is so important to you to look after their every need. You want to protect them and to ensure that they get to live a splendid long life.

When your pet is ill, it can be a major stressor because you don’t always know what’s wrong. Taking your pet for their annual veterinary checkups is one way to do this. You can also look out for some warning signs that your pet needs immediate medical attention with this list.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea or runny bowel movements in your pet can result from any variety of things, including changes in their diet, medicines or stealing pie of the countertops. Rich human foods can result in diarrhea or abdominal discomfort, especially if they ingest something unfamiliar to their usual diet.

According to the information on OurFitPets.com, a dog with Addison's disease will exhibit extreme cases of bloody diarrhea. It is a rare disease, but it can be a serious lifelong challenge for a dog and may result in death.

Lethargy

Lethargy or extreme tiredness is often the most visible symptom your dog can show to tell you something is up. Their energy levels are usually an indicator of their excitement. A tail wag, a jump up to greet you at the door, these are the vital signs you know and love to see in your dog every day.

When you come to see something entirely different, it could be a warning sign that they're not feeling great. Listlessness and difficulty lifting their heads to acknowledging you are signs of this. Common illnesses associated with lethargy are numerous and you can never be sure of the cause without the help of a vet.

Loss of appetite

Every single dog in this world has a favorite treat they just cannot resist. If you’ve trained them well, dogs will come to expect treats often, even going so far as to beg for it when you’re around. If they're lucky, they’ll bag an owner like you who treats them every day.

When your dog refuses a treat or just doesn’t exhibit the same excitement and anticipation for a treat, there might be something more. Untouched food and water bowls could mean a lack of interest in the new brand of food you’re trying out. But it could also mean that your pet is unwell so it is best to inform your vet or book a checkup.

Behavioral changes

Your dog might just be getting old and grumpy, but sudden behavioral changes in pets can be of great concern to families. They love cuddles, play and belly rub all the same. But, if you suddenly see a different side of your pup, perhaps there’s something more to it.

If you’ve noticed a change when you’re trying to pet or go near your dog, they might be experiencing discomfort. They have no other way to convey their pain and so to protect themselves from any further hurt, they will lash out through growling or snapping.

Inability or extreme need “to go”

There are many non-verbal cues that you can look out for as warning signs that your dog is not well. However gross and strange, their bowel movements can be a key indicator of diet, stress, and possible illness in your pet. If they exhibit any difficulty pooping or peeing, they might need medical help.

In extreme cases, increased frequency of urination can be a symptom of diabetes (yes, even in dogs) or kidney disease. It is always best to book your pet in for a checkup with their vet to ensure that you manage their pain, discomfort or diagnosis appropriately.
